Student Spotlight: Catherine Watry

Authored by Emma Dunn, MFR ’27

Forestry studentCatherine Watry is currently in her second semester of the Master of Forest Resources (MFR) in Forest Business program at the University of Georgia. After earning her Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, where she also played on the women’s soccer team, she decided to continue her education by connecting her business background with her personal interest in forestry. Growing up around the industry, Catherine developed a deep appreciation for forestry and its community. During her undergraduate studies, she obtained her Georgia real estate license and gained experience with companies such as Compass South, Beasley Forest Products, and Southern Pine Plantations.

When asked why she chose the MFR program through UGA and the Harley Langdale Jr. Center for Forest Business, she emphasized the value of its unique combination of forest and business education. Watry stated, “I chose this program because of its reputation and the integration of forestry and business. I think it is important to have business knowledge in the industry; therefore I knew this program would be strong and allow me to have a competitive edge when finding a job in the forest industry.” During her time as a student, Watry has had many exciting opportunities as a graduate student. The Timberland Investment Conference is Watry’s personal favorite due to “the opportunity to network with industry professionals and gain insight into market trends and upcoming technologies.”

While planning for the future, Watry remains open-minded about her career path. She shares, “I am still undecided depending on where the markets turn, yet my goal is to end up in land sales or real estate. I hope to work in the Southeast but am keeping my options open.” For future students that are interested in the MFR program, Watry shares this key piece of advice: “Graduate school is more than just an extra degree. It’s an opportunity to make meaningful relationships, expand your knowledge, and network. The UGA MFR program specifically sets you up for success—but you have to grasp that opportunity and make the most of your time here. Some of the most valuable knowledge comes from conversations with industry professionals and peers.”

Through her blend of business education, forestry experience, and natural drive to build relationships, Watry embodies the values of the MFR in Forest Business program as she prepares to enter the forestry sector as a thoughtful and well-rounded professional.
