After Thomas Black graduates with his MFR in Forest Business in December 2024, he will head to Atlanta, GA to work as an Investment Analysist with Weyerhaeuser. Thomas interned with three forest and timber management companies while enrolled in the Center for Forest Business, and supported Dr. Bolding and Dr. Conrad on logging and mill weights research. During his internship with Forisk, he surveyed mill operators about their lumber conversion rates, also known as recovery rates. His Forisk research was published on their blog and showed mill efficiency has improved over the last five years.
Thomas reports: “I earned a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness from Clemson University and have been fortunate to gain valuable experience through internships with Weyerhaeuser, Larson & McGowin, and Forisk. The diverse learning opportunities offered by the Center for Forest Business have been instrumental in preparing me for these roles, marking one of the many reasons I was drawn to the program.
While forestry principles form the core of the program, what truly enriches the experience is the exposure to industry-relevant research and the unique collaboration with the Terry College of Business. I am incredibly grateful for the friendships I’ve formed and the knowledge I’ve gained during my time at UGA. As I move into a full-time position as an Investment Analyst with Weyerhaeuser in Atlanta, GA, I look forward to applying these experiences in my career and maintaining the connections I’ve made.”
